So what are worm castings, really?
Worm castings are, to put it plainly, worm droppings. It sounds unglamorous, but this is one of the oldest and best soil improvers on the planet. As earthworms move through organic matter, they digest it and leave behind a dark, crumbly, almost coffee-ground material. That material is the casting, and it is packed with everything a plant needs to thrive.
The reason gardeners get so enthusiastic is that castings are not just fertiliser. They are a living product. How to use worm castings
The good news is that worm castings are almost impossible to get wrong. Here are the main ways gardeners use them.
As a top dressing, sprinkle a thin layer over the surface of the soil around your plants, then water it in. A handful per plant is plenty. The nutrients wash down to the roots each time you water. This is the simplest method and works for beds, borders and pots alike.
As a potting mix booster, blend castings into your compost when you are potting up or planting out. Around one part castings to four parts compost is a good rule of thumb. Your plants get a gentle nutrient boost and the improved structure helps them settle in.
For seedlings and young plants, mix a small amount into your seed compost. Because castings are so gentle, they give delicate roots a boost without any risk of burning, and they help young plants establish a strong root system early.
As a liquid feed, you can steep worm castings in water to make what gardeners call "worm tea." Add a couple of handfuls to a watering can, let it sit for a day, stir, and use it to water your plants. It is a quick way to spread the benefits across a lot of plants at once.
